Lessons From the Waterboy
Dr Juan P Barrientez II | February 10, 2008Earlier today I watch the Waterboy on TV and wanted to share some of what I learned as it relates to the church. If you have never seen the movie –Mama had trapped Bobby in this imaginary world disconnected from reality, to the point he was not a functioning adult in the world. Bobby has to overcome a few life struggles and mature. The church is much like Bobby.
- Bobby as the waterboy was seen as insignificant. However, someone else saw value in his life. God, saw our value, even when we were valueless (Romans 5:8). God values people and so should his church.
- In order for Bobby to tackle he had to have the right visual stimulation, so to speak. Paul tells the church in his letter to the Philippians to, “Let this mind (or attitude) be in you, that was in Christ Jesus.” Our visual stimulation should be the example of Jesus Christ.
- Bobby had to break away from the trap of his past (Mama), of the same old same old. I believe that church has allowed itself to become trapped by tradition. The church cannot allow itself to be bound by tradition (Mark 7:6-7).
What movie(s) have you seen lately that you learned from on a spiritual level?
